I've been teaching English for five years, working with kids from age 3 to 15. My own story with English is a little different from most tutors you'll find. I went to a school that offered both IB and HKDSE, chose DSE, and got a 5★. Then I went on to study acting in an all-English program in Hong Kong, which honestly shaped how I think about language more than anything else did.

What I've noticed after years of teaching is that most kids who struggle with English aren't struggling because they can't do it. They're scared of it. And once someone is scared of something, they shut down. So the whole point of my lessons is to make English feel so familiar and so tied to things they already care about that the fear just kind of dissolves.

We talk. A lot. We debate, we present, we dig into topics the student actually finds interesting. I've done lessons on Feng Shui, Roman history, personality psychology, murder mystery roleplays. Grammar shows up too, naturally, woven into real conversation rather than treated as the whole point.
The goal is for a student to reach a place where they're just thinking in English. Not translating, not second-guessing, just expressing themselves.
