Hi, I’m Carl Hughes, a qualified teacher with QTS from North Wales, with over 20 years of teaching, tutoring and examiner experience across a wide range of academic and creative subjects.

I specialise in English Language, English Literature, History, Geography, Design Technology and creative academic support, working with learners from KS3 through to GCSE, A-Level and adult education.

My teaching is structured, engaging and highly personalised. I combine clear explanation, high-quality resources, live modelling, targeted questioning and exam-focused practice to help students improve subject knowledge, written accuracy, confidence and independent thinking.

As an experienced teacher and examiner, I understand how assessment objectives, mark schemes and grade boundaries work. I use this knowledge to help learners produce stronger, more focused answers and understand exactly what examiners are looking for.

I have extensive experience supporting a wide range of learners, including high-achieving students aiming for top grades, students who need targeted help to improve progress, and learners who may lack confidence or feel anxious about their studies.

My approach is calm, professional and purposeful. I believe students make the strongest progress when expectations are high, lessons are carefully tailored, and feedback is clear, supportive and practical.

Alongside mainstream teaching, I have worked extensively in one-to-one tuition, helping students deepen understanding, improve exam technique and achieve meaningful academic progress.

I also support adult learners who wish to improve their English communication, writing skills or overall confidence in a calm and professional environment.

Outside of teaching, I have a strong interest in history, design, technology and creative projects. I often bring these interests into lessons to make learning feel relevant, engaging and memorable.

My goal is to help every learner grow in confidence, improve academically and achieve their full potential.
