Hello! My name is Taras Lokotko, and I’m currently working as a researcher at Michigan State University. My areas of expertise are physics, mathematics, and programming. Let me briefly tell you about my background and my approach to teaching.

I was born in Ukraine, and at the age of 23, I graduated with a Master’s degree in Nuclear Physics from Kyiv National University. I then moved to France to pursue a second Master’s degree in Nuclear and High Energy Physics. At the end of my studies in France, I was offered a PhD position at the University of Hong Kong.

My PhD research focused on the experimental nuclear physics, and I had the opportunity to take part in several experimental campaigns in Japan and China. Alongside research, I was actively involved in teaching — developing and leading courses in physics and mathematics, as well as mentoring students through private tutorials.

I want to share with you my teaching approach.
Albert Einstein once said, “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” This idea is at the core of my teaching philosophy. Teaching is not only about transmitting knowledge — it’s about sharpening your own understanding by communicating it clearly to others.

I believe a successful learning experience relies on two pillars: hard work and active communication. I encourage students to explore concepts deeply, often pushing their limits to truly understand the logic behind each problem. I also believe in interactive teaching — asking questions, prompting discussion, and guiding students to discover answers themselves. Whether theoretical or experimental, I approach every course with passion and a desire to help students not only learn, but truly understand how our universe works.

My teaching style is adaptive, student-centred, and grounded in both empathy and structure. I believe that every learner brings a unique set of strengths, experiences, and challenges to the table, so I aim to meet them where they are — academically and emotionally — and support them in reaching their full potential.

I primarily use a scaffolded approach: I start by breaking down complex concepts into manageable parts, use clear examples to build understanding, and gradually release responsibility to the student as their confidence grows. For skills-based learning, I often use the PPP method (Present, Practise, Produce) or a guided inquiry approach, depending on the learner’s needs. I also integrate questioning techniques that promote critical thinking and reflection, encouraging students not just to get the right answer, but to explain their reasoning and understand the “why” behind it.

Support goes beyond academic instruction. I foster a learning environment that is respectful, affirming, and growth-oriented. I check in regularly with students to assess both their academic progress and well-being. Whether it’s providing extra resources, giving timely and constructive feedback, or simply being a patient listener, I aim to empower students to become more independent and resilient learners.

Ultimately, my goal is to make learning meaningful and enjoyable, while helping students take ownership of their success.

I can teach Physics to IGCSE/GCSE, IB MYP, A-levels, and IBDP.

My main focus is to work closely with my students to work on their strong conceptual understanding of topics so that they feel confident in this subject. Moreover, I try to make Physics fun for my students by relating whatever they are studying to their lives by taking into account daily life examples. I also use different animations and simulations, which not only make lessons interactive and engaging but also make concepts easy for students to understand.

To really master Physics, I work closely with my students to polish their comprehension skills, analytical skills, and problem-solving skills, which help them to excel in exams. I aim to develop higher-order thinking skills in my students, which will help them to stand tall in the end.
